Hover Rover Isle of Wight

Castles & Homes

Carisbrooke Castle is one of the Island’s greatest attractions and most famous as the prison for Charles 1st prior to his execution in London. Central to the Isle of Wight this is a great place to start your Island Royal history lesson (bus 9 from Ryde) You’ll need approx 1.5 hours here.

 

Travel onto East Cowes to Osborne House (bus 5 from Newport), Queen Victoria’s family home with grand state rooms and the childrens nurseries. Time at attraction approx 2 hours.

 

Travelling back to Ryde (bus 4 from Osborne) stop off at Quarr Abbey to visit the Catholic Benedictine Monastery in a quarr abbeybeautiful peaceful setting (entrance FREE). Time for visit = 1 hour.

 

Travel Route

Ryde No 9 Bus via Staplers -> Newport No 21 -> Carisbroooke Castle No 21 then 5 -> East Cowes No 4 -> Quarr Abbey No 4 -> Ryde Esplanade & Hovercraft Terminal.

Gardens & Nature

Ventnor Botanic Garden nestling in the undercliff of the Southern top of the Isle of Wight has a sub tropical and exotic plant collection unrivalled elsewhere in the UK. Wander through the gardens enjoy the shop and café (FREE ENTRY – Time at Attraction approx 2 hours).

 

Heading back towards the South East make a visit to the Isle of Wight’s oldest tourist attraction which first opened in 1817. With its leafy gorge, winding woodland and steep sides Shanklin Chine is a magical place for rare plants, wildlife and waterfalls (No 6 then 3 from Ventnor. Time at Attraction approx 1hour)

 

 

Take the No 3 bus back to Ryde. If you still have some energy stop off at the Brading Roman Villa to discover the ancient mosaic floors and collection of Roman archaeology or the village and visit the Dolls Museum and ancient church.

 

 

Travel Route

By Bus: Ryde No 3 then no 6 -> Ventnor Botanic Garden -> No 6 + No 3 –Shanklin Chine (Old Village)  -> No 3 -  Ryde Esplanade and hovertravel Terminal

Needles & Town

Over the most western point of the Island lie the famous Needles Rock and Lighthouse, overlooked by the world famous coloured sands cliffs. The Needles Park offers a range of attractions including chairlift to the beach, Alum Bay Glass and Sweet Manufactory (FREE entry PAYG rides - Time at Attraction  2 hours).

 

Head back to Newport and hit the shops (2 hours). There is a regular market every Tuesday and highly rates farmers market. With independent and well-known chain stores and a great choice for eating out.

 

 

 

Travel Route

Ryde No 9 from Ryde then 7 from Newport -> The Needles No 7 -> Newport Town Centre  No 9 -> Ryde Esplanade

Three Beaches

The Island boasts miles of beautiful sandy beaches in safe bays and many winning awards. On a fair weather day a visit to the beach or three is a must. From the Hovertravel Terminal walk eastwards along the coast and within 5 minutes you’ll find Ryde Sands beach with Appley beach just further along.Ryde Sands are popular with families including at low tide where warm pools stay for hours in the sand.

 

Walk back to Ryde Esplanade and hop on the Island’s only Electric Train to Shanklin (just 22 mins) from Shanklin village walk down to the Esplanade and enjoy the resort, with amusements, crazy golf and a sheltered bay.

 

 

Your choice either walk east to Sandown along the Seafront or take the train back to Sandown to visit this coastal town and traditional beach with deckchairs, pedaloes and ice cream vendors galor!

Ryde Esplande 5 mins -> Ryde Sands -> walk to esplanade for Train (or 2/3 bus) -> Shanklin, Train to Sandown (or 2/3 bus) Train -> Ryde (or 2/3 Bus).

Manor Ruin & Falconry

From Ryde head to Wroxall which is toward the Southern aspect of the Island and walk to Appuldurcombe. Appuldurcombe House, once the grandest house on the Isle of Wight is an important example of English baroque Architecture: the 1701 east front has been restored by English Heritage.

The manor stands in ‘Capability Brown-designed grounds and an exhibition depicts the house and its history. (Bus No 3 Time at Attraction - approx1 hour).

Then walk to the neighbouring Owl & Falconry centre next to the grounds of Appuldurcombe. The centre has a great collection of birds from eagles, hawks, falcons and sleepy owls

Ryde on No 3 Bus – single journey time approx 1h10m. Ryde Esplanade No 3 -> Wroxall for Appuldurcombe House No3

-> Ryde.

Artisan Tour

For this tour you will need to take the Island Breezer Downs Tour from Ryde Esplanade and enjoy the sights of the North East Isle of wight and the scenic Downs.  

The Island Breezer Open top Bus takes you on a tour beginning at Ryde Esplanade heading toward Wootton Station of the Isle of Wight steam Railway, passing the roof top of Quarr Abbey on the way, then to Robin Hill Adventure Park & Gardens, great for families and couples alike, before heading to Amazon World Zoo Park to see the amazing exotic animals.  You can hop on and off to visit any of these attractions but if you want to enjoy the tastes & homemade crafts of the Island, then the Artisan tour is for you.  

Stay on board the Island Breezer Open Top bus until you reach Arreton Old Village where you can see various craftsman at work including glassworks, wood and pottery and enjoy a lunch at the Dairymans Daughter before visiting the homeware shops and fresh produce market hut. (time at Attraction - up to 2 hours approx)

 

Back on the bus you will head toward the hills of the Downs. Alight the bus near Knighton shoot and walk down to the Garlic Farm, its a windey road, but it'll be worth it. With experience of growing Garlic over 50 years and the UK's largest grower The Garlic Farm offer a shop with amazing variety of garlic products, and a restaurant with a mouthwatering menu and staff to help advise on cooking with and enjoying garlic at its best. Walk back up to the Downs road to catch the next Breezer Tour back to Ryde.

Hover Rover Cycle

If you're feeling a little more energetic but don't want to exert yourself too much Hovertravel have teamed up with Joy Ryde who offer hiring out of eco-friendly electric bikes! You can purchase a combination deal which offers discounted Hovertravel Return along with your bike hire. Simply pick up the bikes at Ryde and cycle around the Island to your hearts content. With convenient charging points at pubs & cafes around the Island, there are many places to explore. Simply book at Southsea Terminal.

The Isle of Wight has miles of picturesque countryside that is easily explored by the numerous networks of cycle trails all over the island. From off road cycling to a relaxing ride around one of the towns and villages, the Isle of Wight has it all, and now it is even easier to get around with one of HoverCycle’s electric bikes. 

 

 

Along with the bike customers you will also be provided with a charger, bicycle lock, map, instructions, technical support, helmet and an optional but recommended Hi-Vis vest.
