Hovertravel Ltd provides a hovercraft passenger service for foot passengers between Ryde on the Isle of Wight and Southsea, Portsmouth. Our service provides the quickest way to and from the Isle of Wight and carries approximately 800,000 passengers each year. We currently employee around 75 people based in Ryde and Southsea, most of whom work a mixture of AM and PM shifts to cover our 7 day a week operation.

Current Vacancies

Commercial Executive

As Commercial Executive you will be involved in contributing to the delivery of the commercial strategy set by the Head of Commercial, with specific focus on content and campaign development, creative thinking, website, digital and social media activities and general marketing communications.

You will also be responsible for delivering the digital marketing plan incorporating SEO, PPC, online display, social media, email and websites.

Your role will be split between two companies, based primarily on the Isle of Wight (travel from mainland provided) with one day a week spent at Gatwick Airport.


Sales & Marketing

  • Support the Head of Commercial in organising, planning and running special events.
  •  Research and create a trade associated event plan over a 12 month period.
  • Be responsible for the day to day marketing activity – advertising placement, briefing, maintaining all company brand and marketing material and PR activities to drive sales.
  •  Focus on new product, client and commercial development opportunities.
  • Build strong client and brand relationships with all 3rd party suppliers and airport partners.
  • Based upon customer research, identify product and service enhancements that will help increase revenue, customer loyalty and satisfaction.
  • Provide input into the regular commercial planning procedure, reviewing current and future strategy where appropriate.
  • Support the on-going roll out of the brand narrative across the companies.
  • Research and develop potential opportunities to be associated or nominated for industry specific awards.


  • Drive innovative approaches to digital marking, embracing trends and ideas to ensure our industry opportunities are maximised above competition.
  • Develop other distribution options for social connectivity and company promotion.
  • Build SEO strategies and create campaigns that improve, develop and increase organic reach.
  • Liaise regularly with our 3rd parties in optimising and growing business
  • Identify new e-commerce partners and help build relationships with new on-brand partners.
  • Analyse data and use it to present strong arguments.
  • Develop contacts, content/events and strategic marketing plans for industry read trade publications, for both hardcopy and digital distribution
  • Creation of creative and engaging social media content and management of social campaign.
  • Analysing the ROI and effectiveness of ecommerce & digital marketing activities


  • Respond to all customer service and operations email within the agreed timeframe. Answer sales and customer service calls from agents/customers in line with agreed KPI’s
  • Strive to meet achievable sales and telephone answering targets.
  • Ensure all ‘up selling’ opportunities are maximised.
  • Manage company live chat facility on the company website
  • Engage with group and corporate accounts to generate bookings.
  • Ensure that the Ecommerce websites are optimized to maximize conversions and deliver excellent customer experience
  •  Build content and engaging articles on a quarterly eNewsletter to distribute to all customers
  • ·Create content and newsworthy stories for internal communication.


  • Degree in Digital or Marketing Management or experience equivalent to this level.
  • Competent experience or degree theory of SEO, both technical onsite optimisation, and also driving results via a content lead SEO strategy, and be well versed in Google Analytics.
  • Demonstrate strong experience in copywriting, Search Engine Optimisation, Pay Per Click, social media, email marketing and content (CRM) marketing.
  • Highly organised, strong work ethic - ability to work under pressure and prioritise workloads.
  • Excellent written and IT skills particularly in the use of MS office, social media networking and websites.

We are looking for a full time Hovercraft Pilot to join our team on based on the Isle of Wight. This is a full time vacancy (37.5 hours per week) however we would consider candidates looking for a flexible or part time work arrangement.

In order to take command of a hovercraft on this route, an individual must hold one of the following STCW95 Certificates of Competence (CoC);

  • Master II/2 or 11/3, (Unlimited, <3000GT, or <500GT)
  •  Master II/3, limited to "Hovercraft less than 500GT on near-coastal voyages only". Appropriately qualified seafarers may apply to obtain this CoC issued by the MCA under STCW regulation II/3 as stated in MGN1856 and with reference to Annex D therein. In recognitions of this, applications will be welcomed from holders of:
                    - Chief Mate II/2 or II/3 (Unlimited, or 3000GT
Additionally, as an MCA approved HSC Type Rating Certification Organisation, Hovertravel will provide successful candidates with hovercraft specific training towards the issuance of a HSC (Hovercraft) Type Rating Certificate.

Hovercraft Handling Agent (Apprentice)

12 month Fixed Term Contract

NVQ Customer Service Level 2 - in partnership with Highbury College.

This is a great opportunity to work for the world's longest running commercial hovercraft service, which is also the only scheduled passenger hovercraft service in Europe.

All staff are required to carry out a range of Hovercraft handling related activities as directed by the Company through its policies, procedures and training to facilitate the success of the operation in which you have been trained, including, but not limited to the following:

Front of House

• Assist with the control of passengers and the general public in and around the terminal building.
• Manage the queues outside the terminal, directing passengers or assisting with queries, as appropriate.
• Generate business by pro-actively promoting Hovertravel outside the terminal.
• Answer in-bound telephone calls.

Passenger Service

• Sell and issue published flight tickets
• Operate and maintain the Company ticketing and booking system.
• Receive payment by cash, cheque, credit cards, vouchers, or automatic debits.

Terminal Operations

• Manage the boarding process within the terminal and on the landing area.
• Assist passengers with their luggage, ensuring passengers safely embark and disembark from the craft.
• Loading and unloading the hovercraft of freight and luggage
• Supervise the craft departure or travel with the craft when required.
• Be responsible for the safety of passengers, dealing with security and emergency situations in and around the terminal and on- board.
• Attend to passengers' needs throughout their Hovertravel experience and provide a high level of customer service being friendly, enthusiastic and courteous at all times.

Qualifications required:

You must have a Level 1 in English and Maths (GCSE A-D) or equivalent.

Working week: The successful candidates will work a rolling shift pattern of 2 earlies, 2 lates & 2 days off, timings as follows:
Early – 05.45 – 13.15
Late – 12.45 – 21.15
Early – 07.15 – 14.15
Late – 13.45 – 21.15
Early - 08.15 – 14.15
Late - 13.45 - 09.15
Thurs/Fri/Sat (summer)
