Carisbrooke Castle is one of the Island’s greatest attractions and most famous as the prison for Charles 1st prior to his execution in London. Central to the Isle of Wight this is a great place to start your Island Royal history lesson (bus 9 from Ryde) You’ll need approximately 1.5 hours here.

Travel onto East Cowes to Osborne House (bus 5 from Newport), Queen Victoria’s family home with grand state rooms and the childrens nurseries. Time at attraction approximately 2 hours.

Travelling back to Ryde (bus 4 from Osborne) stop off at Quarr Abbey to visit the Catholic Benedictine Monastery in a beautiful peaceful setting (entrance FREE). Time for visit = 1 hour.

Over the most western point of the Island lie the famous Needles Rock and Lighthouse, overlooked by the world famous coloured sands cliffs. The Needles Park offers a range of attractions including chairlift to the beach, Alum Bay Glass and Sweet Manufactory (FREE entry PAYG rides - Time at Attraction 2 hours).

Head back to Newport and hit the shops (2 hours). There is a regular market every Tuesday and highly rates farmers market. With independent and well-known chain stores and a great choice for eating out.

 

Travel Route

Ryde No 9 from Ryde then 7 from Newport -> The Needles No 7 -> Newport Town Centre No 9 -> Ryde Esplanade

The Island boasts miles of beautiful sandy beaches in safe bays and many winning awards. On a fair weather day, a visit to the beach or three is a must. From the Hovertravel Terminal walk eastwards along the coast and within 5 minutes you’ll find Ryde Sands beach with Appley beach just further along. Ryde Sands are popular with families including at low tide where warm pools stay for hours in the sand.

Walk back to Ryde Esplanade and hop on the Island’s only Electric Train to Shanklin (just 22 minutes) from Shanklin village walk down to the Esplanade and enjoy the resort, with amusements, crazy golf, and a sheltered bay.

Your choice either walk east to Sandown along the Seafront or take the train back to Sandown to visit this coastal town and traditional beach with deckchairs, pedaloes and ice cream vendors galor!

Travel Route

Ryde Esplande 5 minutes -> Ryde Sands -> walk to esplanade for Train (or 2/3 bus) -> Shanklin, Train to Sandown (or 2/3 bus) Train -> Ryde (or 2/3 Bus).

From Ryde head to Wroxall which is toward the Southern aspect of the Island and walk to Appuldurcombe. Appuldurcombe House, once the grandest house on the Isle of Wight is an important example of English baroque Architecture: the 1701 east front has been restored by English Heritage.

The manor stands in ‘Capability Brown-designed grounds and an exhibition depicts the house and its history. (Bus No 3 Time at Attraction - approximately 1 hour).

Then walk to the neighbouring Owl & Falconry centre next to the grounds of Appuldurcombe. The centre has a great collection of birds from eagles, hawks, falcons and sleepy owls

Ryde on No 3 Bus – single journey time approximately 1h10m. Ryde Esplanade No 3 -> Wroxall for Appuldurcombe House No3 -> Ryde.
