The Warrior Trail

The Warrior Trail is a 6 mile circular trail, which has been created in celebration of the Isle of Wight’s most prominent World War stories, that of Jack Seely and his horse Warrior – a real life War Horse. The trail follows much of the route on which Warrior was exercised, which ran all the way from Carisbrooke Castle to the beach at Brook Bay. To start the walk take the no 9 bus from Ryde, next to the Hovertravel terminal, to Newport and then the no 12 bus to Mottistone.

Once at Mottistone
follow the trail which will take along the BS100 path toward the coast, along the coastal path to the Old Lifeboat station, past Brook House and Brook Church and the along the BS39 path to The Longstone before returning to Mottistone.

The Solent Way

Turning to your right when you arrive at Southsea is a promenade walk. This forms part of the The Solent Way, a 60 mile walking route from Milford on Sea to Emsworth harbour, but just for a flavour why not head to Eastney?

Follow the promenade and you will pass the War Memorial, Blue Reef Aquarium, D-Day Story museum, Southsea Castle and South Parade Pier before reaching Eastney where you will see the building previously used as the Royal Marines Museum. Walk a little further to the calm of Langstone Harbour.

Eating Out

Southsea and Portsmouth offers an abundance of places to eat from beach cafes, tea rooms, traditional fish & chips to world cuisine venues and trendy wine bar’s and bistro’s. Heading through Old Portsmouth and onto Gunwharf you will pass a number of traditional style pubs, further on the Spice Island Inn over looking the busy harbour, before arriving at Gunwharf Quays where you are spoilt for choice of pubs and restaurants include the popular Slug & Lettuce pub.

Heading right from Southsea you will see Mozzarella Joes, further along at Southsea Pier you will find the Deep Blue restaurant offering traditional fish and chips amongst other dishes in a light and airy environment.

Head into Southsea and onto Palmerston Road for a whole host of eateries including the Meat & Barrel and onto Osborne Road, for the Belle Isle Bar and Restaurant, both offering a relaxed atmosphere and great food.

If you want to enjoy a shorter route – just one way, or are short on time, why not use the Hoverbus.

The Hoverbus operates to every scheduled hovercraft (every 30 mins) and will take you to Portsmouth City Museum, The Hard for Portsmouth Harbour Station, Gosport Ferry, Historic Dockyard and Mary Rose Trust. It then follows the route onto Commercial Road for shops, Portsmouth & Southsea Station and Guildhall Square & Theatre, before following the route back around to the Hoverport. For more information
