World’s newest passenger hovercraft named by America’s Cup hero Sir Ben Ainslie11/07/2016

Hovertravel’s two new state-of-the-art passenger hovercraft are named by Sir Ben Ainslie as part of a traditional dedication and blessing ceremony conducted on the Isle of Wight.

The new craft, Solent Flyer and Island Flyer, are both liveried with a dynamic representation of the union flag which combines red, blue and the white background of the craft to create a traditional look with a contemporary feel.

“The names of our craft describe what our hovercraft do and where they do it” Adds Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel, “We chose these names to promote the fact that our craft fly at 1.5 metres above the water. The addition of ‘Solent’ is to identify the specific stretch of water where we operate and we added ‘Island’ to demonstrate that we connect two islands. Our new craft fly the flag for Britain with their union flag livery and we are delighted to have Ben Ainslie, a great British hero, take time off his busy schedule of training for the next America’s Cup event, to name our hovercraft.”

Hovertravel’s new craft are highly innovative designs which combine enhanced ergonomics alongside weight and energy efficiencies. The £10 million investment will improve passenger comfort through speedier and easier boarding, a quieter ride and better visibility.

Sir Ben Ainslie said, “The hovercraft was a revolution in sea travel and has become a real iconic British invention. It’s great to see these two new innovative vessels continue to show off the strength of the British marine industry right now. Whilst out training on our development boats, we often ‘fly by’ each other during their trips from the mainland to the Isle of Wight - in addition, since moving to the Island recently, it is also an extremely fast and reliable way to travel.”

In the next month Solent Flyer will be used on an ad hoc basis to service the Hovertravel timetable. This phased strategy of implementation allows the teams at Hovertravel to gradually introduce the new procedures and policies associated with the new craft without disrupting the daily operation.

Hovertravel introduces two new craft in Summer 201627/06/2016

The world’s only passenger hovercraft company has invested in two new craft to replace its existing fleet during this summer: Solent Flyer and Island Flyer.

Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel, explains: “Hovertravel’s current craft will soon be due to be replaced or need extensive refurbishment and we wanted to plan for the future. Ordering two new craft allows us to benefit from the obvious advances in technology since our existing craft were built. Our research indicated that two, more efficient, hovercraft would be the best replacement option and would allow us to continue to serve our customers in the most effective way.”

Hovertravel’s regulator and governing body is the Marine & Coastguard Agency which has been overseeing the build of the two new craft. Solent Flyer and Island Flyer are highly innovative designs which combine enhanced ergonomics alongside weight and energy efficiencies.

The new craft will deliver efficiencies through the latest developments in engine technology and an overall design philosophy to reduce weight across all components. There will be two of latest fuel efficient, low emission, diesel engines with a hybrid diesel-electric drive to the bow thrusters, eliminating the need for a mechanical drive.

Passenger comfort will be improved through speedier and easier boarding, a quieter ride and better visibility. The new craft has large slow turning propellers for noise reduction, much bigger windows and powered bow ramps & steps.

Hovertravel also investigated the ergonomics of the new craft, employing leading human behaviour and design specialists, CCD Design & Ergonomics to review where people choose to sit on the craft, as well as how the customers behave during the process of getting on and off.

“Our business is focussed on improving the customer experience, “adds Neil Chapman, “and we carefully considered how we could improve our service delivery with our new craft, using CCD’s valuable input. For example, it was this analysis which demonstrated the need for both a ramp and steps, along with handrails.”

“The new craft project has extended beyond the craft with the introduction of a new uniform and refresh of the interiors of both our terminals, all adding to the transformation of the business into a contemporary, customer-centric company serving both the local communities and attracting visitors from around the world.”

Work experience at the world’s only passenger hovercraft service for Festival weekend10/06/2016

Hovertravel has provided four work placements for students from Highbury College. The students are on various travel courses and the placement, timed to co-incide with the Isle of Wight Festival, will give them an insight into the world’s only passenger hovercraft service.

Andrew Ross, Head of Ground Operations at Hovertravel, explains, “Work experience placements for school and college students are usually the first chance for a young person to see the world of work for themselves. We wanted to engage students by involving them in some of our busiest days.”

Two thirds of employers say that work experience is a crucial factor when hiring staff – more than those who prioritise academic qualifications – according to UK Commission for Employment and Skills research.

Hovertravel is committed to developing talent and increasing their community engagement through activities such as work experience placements. The students will be learning about Hovertravel by shadowing staff who scan passengers on, supporting passengers getting onto the craft and interacting with passengers in-front of the Southsea terminal.

“Very sadly we lost our friend and colleague Graham Snow last year” explained Hovertravel’s commercial and marketing manager Loretta Lale, “The Earl Mountbatten Hospice took such wonderful care of him and so even more than ever we're supporting the EMH and trying to raise £10,000 through Walk the Wight.”

Hovertravel unveils new uniform on new craft09/05/2016

A new, modern uniform, which has been designed to work with Hovertravel’s new craft, has been launched this week. Unveiled at a staff catwalk show, the uniform has been photographed on board the world’s newest passenger hovercraft which also shows some of the interior for the first time.

The new uniforms are part of a programme of improvements to further boost customer service at Hovertravel, which also includes refreshing the terminals and ensuring staff are in areas where they can help customers most effectively.

Hovertravel’s Commercial and Marketing Manager Loretta Lale said: “The launch of these new uniforms is an important step as we conclude what is the biggest investment in passenger hovercraft in the world and for more than a generation.

This will see two new hovercraft crossing the Solent, offering a faster journey than any other ferry operator. We are keen to help keep people moving and communities prospering, helping to drive economic growth across the whole Solent region.

For our new uniforms it was important to identify colours that would not replicate, but rather complement and accentuate through the subtle use of red accents, the craft livery. We proposed shape concepts for garments that won’t date, deliberately avoiding the latest fashion statements and instead creating a classic edge but with a clean finish and quality feel”

Hovertravel staff were involved at every step of the way, taking part in the development of the new garments through workshops and feedback sessions which took on board comments and suggestions to finalise the uniform's design. This is the first update of the uniform in over a decade and the new clothing has been created with comfort, durability, sustainability and attention to detail in mind.

“Hunter Apparel is delighted to be in partnership with Hovertravel for the design and delivery of their new uniform clothing.” explains Jeff Hunter Chief Contracts Officer at Hunter Apparel Solutions Ltd, “We look forward to being involved at this exciting new phase of the Hovertravel success story as they launch their new craft”.

HRH The Earl of Wessex visits Hovertravel to celebrate the success of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award29/04/2016

HRH The Earl of Wessex visited Hovertravel, the world’s only passenger hovercraft service, to see first-hand the difference The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) makes to young people and communities on the Isle of Wight.

The Charity is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary this year, having helped to transform the lives of millions of young people in the UK and across the globe since it was founded in 1956.

Using the board room at Hovertravel, HRH The Earl of Wessex met Head Teachers from IOW and Portsmouth schools to discuss key issues around using DofE to support young people accessing local activities or initiatives, tackling isolation issues and high levels of deprivation.

Undertaking a DofE Award gives 14 to 24 year olds a unique opportunity to grow as young adults, gaining valuable life experience while developing essential employability skills. Setting their own challenges and learning practical skills helps to prepare each individual for the world of work.

“We are strong supporters of the DofE for the local community and we welcome visits from young people as they complete their challenges,” explains Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel, “Hosting the Charity during their diamond anniversary year is a special privilege for us and we want the visit to raise awareness of its good work across the Island.”

As a Trustee and a Gold Award holder, HRH The Earl of Wessex has championed the DofE for many years. As part of the Diamond Anniversary, The Earl of Wessex is travelling around the UK to help celebrate the hard work of DofE Volunteers and the successes of DofE participants.

Peter Westgarth, Regional Director / CEO of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, adds:

“As we celebrate 60 years of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, it’s clear that the Charity is an integral part of life on the Isle of Wight and has played an invaluable role in the development of hundreds of young people in the community. It’s fantastic to see the Island being recognised for the outstanding work it does and enormous thanks must be given to the volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that every DofE participant makes the most of this wonderful opportunity.”

Although the real DofE Award is limited to 14 to 24 year olds, in its Diamond Anniversary year the DofE Charity is calling on people of all ages to set and achieve their goals through the DofE Diamond Challenge. Inspired by the essence of the DofE, this one-off initiative for 2016 aims to give everyone a flavour of the life-changing benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The Charity is encouraging people to sign up at www.DofEDiamondChallenge.org and set themselves a challenge that they can be proud of – be that an adventure, a skill or something personal.

HRH The Earl of Wessex will be visiting a number of regions continuing his DofE Diamond Anniversary Tour of the UK until October.

New craft training starts at Hovertravel 11/04/2016

Today Hovertravel has announced it will begin instructing its pilots, engineers and crew how to operate the first of its new craft: Solent Flyer.

“Solent Flyer is now officially part of our fleet, having arrived in Ryde earlier today,” explained Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel, “Now we begin the next phase of bringing these exciting new craft into operation; the training of our teams on what is the newest passenger hovercraft in the world.”

“The comprehensive training programmes will involve everyone in the company and possibly even some from outside the company as we conduct loading trials.” Continues Neil, “It is critical that we spend time learning how to operate our new craft and, although I know everyone wants to get on board as soon as possible, we had always planned in a three month period for our staff to be familiarised with the new technologies and efficiencies this new craft will bring our company and our customers. For example, we have planned a one to one training for our Pilots, there is training from our Griffon’s construction teams to our engineers to be undertaken and, there is one to one training with our crew. The good news is that we are still on schedule to introduce both our new craft in to service this summer.”

Solent Flyer will now be based at Ryde.

Hovertravel enhances morning commuter timetable 24/03/2016

From 01 April 2016 Hovertravel has added two extra crossings to its busy morning commuter timetable at 0830 from Ryde and at 0845 from Southsea, demonstrating that the hovercraft is still the fastest and most frequent ferry across the Solent.

“We have listened to our commuters and regular travellers who told us that these additional services will help them co-ordinate their onward travel arrangements,” explains Loretta Lale, Hovertravel’s Commercial and Marketing Manager, “By adding services to our summer timetable we are making sure we continue to support the needs of the local communities both in Portsmouth and on the Isle of Wight.”

Hovertravel’s summer timetable is available in the terminals and online at: http://www.hovertravel.co.uk/timetable/index.php

Hovertravel reveals exciting new livery and names of new craft18/03/2016

Hovertravel has revealed the new look and announced the names for its two new craft. The striking design is a dynamic representation of the union flag which uses the red, blue and white background of the craft to create a traditional look with a contemporary feel.

“We wanted to celebrate the Britishness of our operation” explained Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel, “The hovercraft is a British invention and, here in the Solent, over fifty years later, Hovertravel is the only scheduled passenger hovercraft service in the world. As both a local community service and an international tourist attraction we are proud to fly the flag for Britain. With images of our unique craft shared daily we are excited about the colourful impact our new fleet will make to the Solent.”

Hovertravel has also announced the names for the new fleet: Solent Flyer and Island Flyer.

“The names of our craft are straightforward and simple; describing what our hovercraft do and where they do it” continued Neil, “There is a strong history of using the word ‘flyer’ in transport to describe fast vehicles and we chose this description to combine our quickest way across the Solent with the fact that our craft fly at 1.5 metres above the water. The addition of ‘Solent’ is to identify the specific stretch of water where we operate and we added ‘Island’ to demonstrate that we connect two islands.”

Hovertravel’s first craft, Solent Flyer, will continue its sea trials in the Solent next week and, with its sister craft Island Flyer, is due to be in service this summer.

Hovertravel becomes an Official Marketing Partner for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Portsmouth 201610/03/2016

Hovertravel, the world’s only scheduled passenger hovercraft service, has been named as the Official Marketing Partner for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Portsmouth, part of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series events, building up to the final races to be staged in Bermuda in 2017.

“There is such a long history of ocean racing on the Solent, where we operate,” said Loretta Lale Hovertravel’s Commercial and Marketing Manager, “This great sailing spectacle will again showcase the Solent to a global audience and we are proud to be an official partner. We have created a package just for island residents and increased our service to help get Islanders across to this event.”

Hovertravel has combined travel and one day access to the Race Village into one package with a price of £28 per adult and £14 per child.

The America’s Cup action returns to Portsmouth in July and it’s again all about fast paced action on the water and thrills on land, as the teams reach speeds of 40mph just meters away from the spectators on shore. The best place to watch the action is from the Race Village in Southsea which offers family friendly features and exciting interactive content focused on the sport of sailing. Ticket holders can learn all about the America’s Cup including the history, the technology, the teams, the sailors and of course watch the spectacular racing action as the best sailors in the world race on the fastest boats. Spectators will also enjoy three aerobatic displays, including the Red Arrows, over the three days event. The Race Village makes for a great day out!

For the event, July 21-24 2016, Hovertravel is expanding its normal timetable by almost 30%, with an extra 42 crossings over the Saturday and Sunday, giving spectators the opportunity to experience both sides of the Solent and the chance to soak up the atmosphere in an unrivalled maritime location.

“We are delighted to be working with Hovertravel, their Southsea Terminal is located metres away from our Race Village, they are a fantastic supporter of the event and have been on-board from day one,” said Dan Wilkinson Communication, Director for The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth, “the Isle of Wight audience is a key market for us with thousands of residents supporting and attending the event last year. The extra Hovertravel crossings will provide a convenient and essential gateway for our Isle of Wight ticket holders.”

New hovercraft storms through sea trials 04/03/2016

Hovertravel’s new craft is progressing through the sea trials phase of its development. This week the craft successfully landed at Southsea and passed a full evacuation test.

Last Friday, in order to test the emergency systems, a full evacuation trial was carried out. 80 passengers, volunteers from both Hovertravel & Griffon Hoverwork, were on board. The trial tested the crew announcements, on board safety signage, safety video and lifesaving equipment. The evacuation took just over eight minutes which is actually half the time to meet the regulatory requirements. The Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) observed the evacuation and approved all procedures.

Hovertravel’s new craft have four digital screens which will show the safety video on every departure. This video covers all aspects of the procedures to follow in the event of an emergency as required by the Maritime Coastguard Agency and is believed to be one of the first ever such videos to include sign language instructions.

For the first time, the seats were fitted for the evacuation trial. Hovertravel has searched the world to source MCA regulatory, comfortable, durable and stylish seats for our new craft with the best option, to fit this high level of requirements, being manufactured in Perth, Australia.

Another trial this week was the landing trial at the Southsea Hoverpad. This took place on Wednesday in Force Seven winds, allowing the test pilot to develop the best technique for landing at Southsea and also evaluate the craft’s skirt in these conditions. This trial proved very successful with several landings and departures completed in challenging weather.

Next week the last phase of the manufacturer’s trials is due to take place and on completion of this, the Hovertravel training programme for pilots, engineers and crew will start.

Hovertravel updates customers on new craft26/02/2016

Hovertravel has, today, announced a series of updates on the introduction of its new craft.

“As well as giving an insight from myself,” explained Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel, “we will be introducing you to our engineers, pilots, crew and other staff to give you updates into this momentous project.”

Following on from Freedom 90 being used as part of Griffon Hoverwork’s sea trials programme on the sandbanks just off the shore at Ryde last week, this craft will be tested at Griffon and on the Solent, possibly visiting Ryde and Southsea, over the next four to six weeks. Once these are completed, the first craft will be delivered to Ryde for a further two to three month period of comprehensive training with Hovertravel.

Neil adds: “We will be training pilots, engineers, crew and staff, as well as conducting loading trials during this time. This programme is a safety critical element of the introduction of our new fleet and it is essential to note that until this is completed to the satisfaction of the Marine & Coastguard Agency, we will not be able to use the craft for customers. “

Following a recent Hovertravel User Group (HUG) meeting, here are some questions and answers which have already been raised:

1. Why is it white?

The new craft are currently plain white as the branding is applied just a few days before they are delivered to us. The new livery is dynamic and exciting and will make a great impact on and off the water.

2. What is its capacity?

The new craft can carry 80 passengers, and as you know we are the only ferry crossing company for foot passengers that allows you to book your seat to make sure your preferred time is secured for your comfort.

3. Will bikes be allowed on board?

Yes, we will be carrying bikes, although the exact number will determined by the loading trials in April.

4. Will the new fleet be more reliable?

We are going to see a number of efficiencies, but as with any new car, train or plane there will be a time required for the craft to settle in.

5. When will it be in service?

It has always been our aim to have both new craft running our timetable in the summer. We are currently on schedule to achieve this aim and expect to have both craft operational in the early part of the summer.

Hovertravel is keen to receive further questions about the new craft via email ( info@hovertravel.co.uk  ) and is urging anyone interested in the project to follow the progress on Hovertravel’s Facebook and Twitter.

First hover for Hovertravel’s new craft 23/01/2016

Hovertravel has released more details about their new craft project. The first of the two craft hovered for the first time last week and this week has been moved out of the engineering shed to have the propellers connected to the engines.

“The first hover for any hovercraft is a highly significant goal and everyone at Hovertravel and Griffon Hoverwork was delighted to be able to reach this major milestone in the build project”, explained Loretta Lale, Hovertravel's Commercial and Marketing Manager, “The next stage is to prepare the craft to undergo performance testing on the water.”

With the project timings all on schedule, this first craft has been rigorously inspected by both the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Lloyds Register. Following their approval and the provision of a Permit to Operate and Trials Exemption Certificate, the craft can now be tested on the water.

“With more than 40 years of experience and having constructed over 170 hovercraft, Griffon Hoverwork has an unrivalled experience in working with this type of vessel” added Selina Kefford, Marketing Manager at Griffon Hoverwork, “As part of our comprehensive trials/testing process, we will soon be measuring the performance of the craft on the water to ensure it meets with our manufacturing and design parameters.’’

Griffon is expected to start conducting these tests within two weeks.
