A Tudor Image of Portsmouth

  • Description

  • Dates & Prices

What is it all about?

The Cowdray Picture shows the sinking of the Mary rose as she defended Henry VIII's England from a French invasion attempt in 1545. It also gives us a wonderfully detailed view of Tudor Portsmouth.

Together with contemporary mapping of the town it shows a vision of Portsmouth as it looked almost 500 years ago.

The Portsmouth Museum is proud to host Dr Dominic Fontana who's presenting a lively and richly illustrated talk combining Tudor art, geography, history and archaeology to explore and better understand the Cowdray picture and Tudor Portsmouth.

View Portsmouth revisited, a stunning display of paintings and prints of the city dating from the late 17th century to the early 1900s, before or after the talk.
