The Needles Old Battery has the most dramatic views you can see of the famous Needles rocks and lighthouse without getting wet. There’s an underground tunnel that runs deep through the cliffs to explore, and for little visitors, there are free children’s trails as well as an Anderson style shelter, where you can discover what it would have been like to hide while the bombs dropped around you. Inside the former signal station, you’ll find the 1940s tea room. It serves tasty cakes, sandwiches, lunches and desserts, all freshly made on site. The New Battery, higher up the headland, was once a secret rocket testing site during the 1950s and 1970s. There’s an exhibition explaining the work that was carried out here and a recreation of how one of the rooms would have looked at the time. It’s a great spot for a picnic, and there’s also a kiosk selling hot and cold drinks, ice creams and snacks.
