What Is Bookfest?
Portsmouth has a strong literary heritage including Charles Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and HG Wells and Many more. Portsmouth BookFest continues that tradition, attracting diverse audiences to exciting events featuring popular and accessible authors.
Portsmouth BookFest is jointly organised by Portsmouth City Library Service and The Hayling Island Bookshop. There is an associated schools programme organised by Portsmouth School Library Service.
Set across several weeks, BookFest hosts a variety of events in venues across the city. From meet and greets with literary superstars to writing workshops, there's something for everyone. Authors who have previously appeared at Portsmouth BookFest include Jacqueline Wilson, Andy McNab, Michael Morpurgo, James Herbert and many more.
There's a vast plethora of events to choose from, just the first weeks events include:
- 19/02/2020, Launch Night, 18:30 - Join us for the official Launch Night of the 2020 Festival. ( £4 )
- 19/02/2020, Harry Potter Party, 12:00 - 14:00 - Come along to the Harry Potter Party which will include activities, a magician, dressing up box and lots more! Fancy dress is optional! (Only children require Tickets!) ( £3 )
- 20/02/2020, Harry Potter Party, 12:00 - 14:00 - Come along to the Harry Potter Party which will include activities, a magician, dressing up box and lots more! Fancy dress is optional! (Only children require Tickets!) ( £3 )
- 20/02/2020, Children’s writing workshop, 12:00 - 13:30 - This writing workshop will challenge your beliefs, ask some tough questions and give you different ways into writing to get those creative juices going. (Suitable for ages 11 - 15 )
-21/02/2020, Tracey Corderoy picture book storytime – Suitable for ages 2-6, 10:00 or 14:30 Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Tracey Corderoy will host these special story times
-22/02/2020, Write Your Novel Creative writing classes with William Sutton, 10:30 - 12:15 Sign up for these brilliant sessions run in a friendly, informal atmosphere by an internationally published author. Set realistic aims, explode myths – and write. ( £30 for 4 sessions )
-23/02/2020, The Stitched World of Jane Austen, 10:00 - 16:00 - As part of a year-long project exploring the world of Jane Austen, Kim Edith invites you to an in-studio exhibition of her work. ( FREE )
-24/02/2020, T’Articulation’s Open Mic Night, 19:00 - 21:30 - We’re happy for you to just listen to our offerings, of newly written poetry and prose, or to join in. Entry is free, whether you’re performing or just being part of the audience

Take the Hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde then catch the Hoverbus to Portsmouth and Southsea Station, from there its a 2 minute walk and you're at Guildhall Square.
