Our Review

Hovertravel’s hovercraft are first of class and we appreciate that reliability is key for customers.

Delivering a reliable, safe service for our customers is our focus and primary objective. We have assessed and examined all areas of the business to see how we can improve consistency and reliability including and not limited to; our craft, our customers’ needs, our ground operations and our communications.

Press Release

New Winter Timetable

On Thursday 1st November 2018, we will start our new winter timetable which will be operated until 31st March 2019. In line with previous year’s seasonal demand, we will be operating an hourly service outside of peak periods.

During peak periods we will continue with the current 30-minute frequency and in 2019 we plan to enhance that with the addition of a 0800 from Ryde and a 1715 from Southsea, Monday to Friday in school term times only. In addition, a separate service will be allocated to Royal Mail to ensure the 1900 from Southsea improves its on time performance.

The new timetable is available on our website here. This new timetable will ensure that we will no longer operate a shuttle service. There will be special arrangements to the timetable for the Christmas period (24th December -1st January 2019)

From 1st April 2019 we revert to our 30-minute frequency throughout the day and these services are available for booking with immediate effect.

Our Fleet

Our fleet consists of Island Flyer and Solent Flyer, this enables us to swap between craft, manage planned maintenance and unexpected issues to protect our timetable and improvement of reliability and on time performance (OTP).

Hovertravel’s objective is to fully utilise it’s two craft fleet to help manage the peaks and troughs which all transport business face when operating an intensive, daily service. To maintain our two craft fleet, we need to finish the current engineering tasks on Solent Flyer this is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. The same tasks on Island Flyer have been scheduled to be completed by March. In the meantime you will see both craft at Ryde for a period of time when they will be utilised to operate our new Winter timetable.

Service Status

We’ve evaluated the methods used to communicate our service status and found that there are major issues with the consistent delivery of messages. At the end of the month we will stop service status push notifications and emails. Our service status will be available on demand only via our website, our app and via service status phone line.

Duty Managers

To ensure consistent management presence across all operational hours, from 6:00 to 21:00, we have introduced three new Duty Manager Positions who have responsibility for all areas of our operation.

These experienced and competent individuals; Scott, Terri and Brett all have complete autonomy to manage the day-to-day operation and handle all customer enquiries. They oversee the terminals, the craft, our staff and our customer service delivery.

Hoverbus Timetable

To allow greater connectivity between the Hoverbus and our hovercraft at Southsea we are currently requesting a revision of the Hoverbus timetable from Portsmouth City Council.

The Hoverbus will still undertake the same route however it will depart from Southsea terminal one minute after the scheduled arrival of the hovercraft and arrive back at Southsea terminal 10 minutes before the scheduled hovercraft departure time.  Notification of the implementation of this will be given in due course and is expected to be January or February 2019.

Evolving HUG (Hovertravel User Group)

When we formed the Hovertravel User Group in 2011, we hoped for a group that represented all our customers, in April of this year, we publicly requested representatives from a wider selection of stakeholders, but this did not materialise and 90% of the group are made up of our regular commuter customers.

The HUG will now meet twice each year at a lunchtime and in the evening, so we can accommodate attendees from suggested groups such as charities i.e.  Isle Access, local authorities of Portsmouth & the Isle of Wight, our Hovercare passengers and partners, commercial partners and our leisure customers.

The next HUG dates are 6th March at 1300 and 11th September at 1700.

We recently launched our HoverCare cards in response to listening to the local community. By showing the HoverCare Card to our staff, our customers will receive any extra assistance they may need without even having to ask and can be confident that our teams are on hand to make sure each and every journey is the best it can possibly be.

Cards can be requested in the terminals on production of the appropriate identification. Come along to one of our coffee mornings, sign up for your card and see how we can provide assistance which is best suited to you. Hovertravel’s forthcoming coffee morning sessions will run between 10am and 12noon and are planned for the following dates: Monday 19th November and Wednesday 5th December.

Let’s Talk About Bookings

After a recent review, we conducted that revealed up to 70% of our customers are making bookings and then not travelling on their booked times, which has a significant impact on the operation,  affects all customers and results in longer than anticipated standby queues.

Hovertravel is proud to be the only foot passenger booked service across the Solent and from mid-November we will be introducing a revised process on bookings to ensure fair use for all customers.

Off Peak Travel

Our Off Peak fare is very popular with a family day return ticket available for just £30.

Tickets must be booked 48 hours in advance and customers must travel on their booked services.

Looking Forward To 2019

Looking at the successes we had this year with late services for Victorious and Portsmouth Football Club’s late fixtures, the extra flights for Pride Weekend and several charters to Lee-On-Solent, we will be repeating these for 2019, planning additional services into the timetables which continue to attract tourists to the Isle of Wight.

New T’s and C’s will be implemented during November – these can be reviewed here
